How to tell the difference between super five and six network cables

:2025-04-17

There are some obvious differences between Category 5 and Category 6 network cables, which can be observed and distinguished from the following aspects:

  First, structural differences

Six types of network cable: with a cross skeleton inside, this structure can trap four pairs of twisted pairs in the groove of the skeleton, playing a role in fixing and separating them, thus reducing the mutual interference between the wire pairs and improving the quality of signal tranSMission.

Super Category 5 network cable: usually without a cross skeleton and other separation structures, the interference between the four pairs of twisted pairs is relatively large.

  Second, wire diameter and material

Six types of network cable: relatively thick wire diameter, bare copper wire diameter is generally about 0.57mm (wire gauge is 23AWG), thicker wire diameter can reduce resistance and reduce signal attenuation.

Super Category 5 network cable: The wire diameter is generally thin, usually around 0.5mm.

  III. Performance performance

Six types of network cable: transmission frequency of 250MHz or higher, capable of providing a stable transmission rate of 1000Mbps (ie 1Gbps), and better performance in anti-interference and other aspects, resulting in more reliable transmission performance in practical applications.

Super Category 5 cable: Usually supports a transmission frequency of 100 MHz, although it can also provide a transmission rate of up to 1000 Mbps, but in long-distance transmission or high interference environments, the performance may not be as stable as Category 6 cable.

  IV. Identification differences

Six types of network cables: The words "Cat.6" are usually marked on the outer packaging.

Super Category 5 network cable: The words "Cat.5e" will be marked on the outer packaging.

  Application scenarios

Type 6 network cable: suitable for scenarios with high requirements for network speed and stability, such as multiple devices simultaneously playing high-resolution video, downloading and uploading large files, etc., or the need to upgrade the network in the future. In the core network area of large enterprises, data centers and other places with extremely high requirements for network performance and stability, Type 6 network cables are widely used.

Super Category 5 network cable: For general household network connections, such as surfing the Internet, watching videos, playing games, etc., Super Category 5 network cable can usually meet the needs. In small offices, if there are not many network devices and the data transmission volume is not particularly large, Super Category 5 network cable can also be competent. In large enterprises or data centers, Super Category 5 network cable is generally used in some areas that are not so demanding on network performance, such as some daily network connections in ordinary office areas.

In summary, by observing the differences in network cable structure, wire diameter and material, performance performance, logo, and application scenarios, the differences between super five network cables and six network cables can be clearly seen. In practical applications, the appropriate network cable type should be selected according to specific needs.
