What metal is in the network cable?

:2025-04-17

The metal core inside the network cable mainly varies according to different types of network cables, but common materials mainly include copper and aluminum. The following is a detailed analysis of the metal materials inside the network cable:

  Copper network cable core

Excellent performance: Copper cable core is widely used in various network scenarios due to its excellent electrical conductivity and stability. It is currently the most used cable core material in network equipment.

  Type:

Oxygen-free copper: The purity of copper in oxygen-free copper network wires is very high, usually greater than 99.95%, and the oxygen content is not more than 0.003%, and the total impurity content is not more than 0.05%. This high purity of copper makes oxygen-free copper network wires have extremely low resistance, usually no more than 10Ω within a length of 100 meters. Oxygen-free copper network wires can tranSMit long distances (about 120~ 150 meters), while the signal transmission is stable and the packet loss rate is low. Therefore, in scenarios such as network engineering, network high definition monitoring projects and home decoration taking dark wires, oxygen-free copper network cables are the first choice.

Bronze (copper clad copper): Bronze mesh wire, also known as copper clad copper mesh wire, its conductor is secondary return copper, which contains more impurities. The resistance of 100 meters length is about 40 Ω, and the distance that can be transmitted is about 80 meters. Although bronze has a high resistance value, its physical properties are stable, strong oxidation resistance and relatively long service life. However, due to its transmission performance is not as good as oxygen-free copper, the application scenarios are relatively limited.

Copper clad aluminum: Copper clad aluminum mesh wire is coated with a layer of oxygen-free copper on the surface of aluminum or aluminum/steel alloy core. Due to the poor conductivity of aluminum, the DC resistance of the copper clad aluminum conductor is greater than that of the pure copper conductor. Despite its lower price, the transmission performance, oxidation resistance and service life are not as good as the oxygen-free copper mesh wire. However, in certain scenarios, such as the need to reduce costs and the requirements for transmission performance are not high, copper clad aluminum mesh wire is still a viable option.

  Second, aluminum mesh cable core

Lower cost: Compared to copper wire cores, aluminum wire cores are more affordable.

Poor performance: However, aluminum cable cores have poor transmission performance and are prone to attenuation. Therefore, aluminum cable cores are not an ideal choice in network scenarios that pursue high performance and stability.

High conductivity aluminum mesh cable: High conductivity aluminum mesh cable is a high-performance copper-aluminum-silver alloy mesh cable, also known as copper-clad silver mesh cable. Although it contains aluminum components, its transmission performance and oxidation resistance have been significantly improved through special alloy treatment and copper plating process. High conductivity aluminum mesh cable can transmit long distances (such as 150180 meters), but its service life is relatively short, usually around 45 years.

  III. Other materials

In addition to copper and aluminum, there are also some special materials such as four-iron and four-aluminum cable. This kind of cable has poor quality, unstable transmission quality, and is prone to attenuation. Therefore, it is rarely used in practical applications.

In summary, the metal core inside the network cable mainly includes two materials: copper and aluminum. Among them, oxygen-free copper cable is widely used in various network scenarios because of its excellent electrical conductivity and stability; while aluminum cable core is used in specific scenarios because of its low price. When choosing a network cable, comprehensive consideration should be made according to actual needs and budget.
