Compatibility issues between Category 6 crystal heads and Category 5 crystal heads

Update Time:2025-04-23Traffic:

There are some differences in compatibility between the six types of crystal heads and the five types of crystal heads, which are specifically reflected in the following aspects:

  Physical size and structure

Six types of crystal head: In order to adapt to thicker six types of network wires (copper core diameter is usually between 0.52 and 0.58 mm), the aperture of the six types of crystal head will be increased accordingly. In addition, the eight touchpoints of the six types of crystal head are usually staggered up and down into two rows.

Five types of crystal head: The diameter of the copper core of the five types of network wire is about 0.45 to 0.51 mm, so the aperture of the five types of crystal head is relatively SMall. The eight touchpoints of the five types of crystal head are usually lined up.

Due to differences in physical size and structure, Type 6 crystal heads generally cannot be directly inserted into Type 5 cable (unless the core diameters are similar), and Type 5 crystal heads may not be suitable for thicker Type 6 cable.

  Transmission performance

Six types of crystal heads: support up to 1000 Mbps (even up to 10Gbps, but depending on the actual application environment) transmission rate, suitable for Gigabit Ethernet and higher speed network environment. At the same time, the six types of crystal heads have stronger anti-interference ability and higher signal integrity, which helps to reduce signal attenuation and interference.

Five types of crystal head: supports transmission rates up to 100 Mbps, suitable for Fast Ethernet. Its anti-jamming ability and signal integrity are relatively weak, which may cause signal interference or attenuation during high-speed transmission.

  III. Compatibility and application scenarios

Compatibility: Although the Type 6 crystal head can be inserted into some Type 5 cables at the physical level (especially those with similar core diameters), due to the original design intention and performance differences, such a combination cannot play the performance level of the Type 6 crystal head, and may even cause signal distortion or reduce network efficiency. On the contrary, when the Type 5 crystal head is used on the Type 6 line, it can only achieve the standard performance of the Type 5 line.

Application scenarios: The five types of crystal heads are suitable for 100M network speed environments, such as general home and small office scenarios. The six types of crystal heads are more suitable for large network environments and scenarios that require high-speed transmission, such as corporate offices, data centers, etc.

  IV. Price and cost

Six types of crystal heads: Compared with five types of crystal heads, the price of six types of crystal heads is higher. This is because six types of crystal heads have higher transmission rates and better performance, so their manufacturing costs are also higher.

Five types of crystal heads: the price is relatively moderate, and the technology is mature and stable.

To sum up, there are significant differences in compatibility between the six types of crystal heads and the five types of crystal heads. When selecting a crystal head, comprehensive consideration should be made based on factors such as specific network requirements, network cable specifications, and budget.
